Title: Prodigy (Legend, #2)
Author: Marie Lu
Publisher: Penguin
Published: Jan 29, 2013
Buy: The Book Depository
Not only do we have a brilliant sequel here, and one that effortlessly avoids second book syndrome, but Marie Lu also proves just how far she has progressed as a writer since the release of Legend. Prodigy is better - the world-building is sharper, more precise, the characters are perfectly developed and their relationships are wonderfully polished. The improvement is impressive, and with that, we have an excellent follow-up to the first instalment and an exciting continuation of June and Day’s story.

The plot takes a different stance in this book, with the focus shifting to the role of the Patriots and their plans for the assassination of the new Elector Primo. As June and Day arrive in Vegas, they join the Patriots in an attempt to rescue Day’s younger brother and escape to the Colonies. In return for the Patriots’ assistance, the two must play a part in Anden’s death. This storyline works brilliantly. Prodigy, although initially slow-paced, is not devoid of action. Plenty of progression is made during this book without it being unrealistically staggering or overwhelming. The world-building is seamless, with little effort needed to comprehend the situation in Lu’s fictional America. We get a much better indication of the tension between the Colonies and Republic here than in Legend, and are even rewarded with a trip into the mysterious opposing side. In the meantime, Lu does not make the mistake of neglecting her characters.
Despite June and Day being painfully separated for a large part of the book, as in Legend, we get to follow the story through two perspectives, so there is ample opportunity for character development on both sides. June is as strong and determined as ever, and also suddenly more likable for it. Day is just as convincing, if not more, with a little sliver of vulnerability breaking through his street-toughened exterior. Their romance is not a focal part of the plot, but it is pleasingly present and emphasised in the most appropriate places. The two together make a wonderful team, and create just as much of an impression separately. If that was not evident in the first book, then it certainly is now.
There are hints of a potential love triangle (or perhaps even a love square), but these are not too pronounced. Lu is smart enough to keep it to a minimum, but makes the most of the occasion to sharpen Tess and Anden’s characters. As the new Elector Primo, and a very key individual of the story, the latter is the more interesting of the two, and Lu’s subtle development of him is excellently incorporated. Several other characters make an appearance in this book, most, if not all of them, adding just the right amount of weight and tension to the plot. Prodigy is one those books where, no matter who is narrating, or which set of characters is present, it is constantly engaging. Come the ending – and what an ending it is! – it is easy to appreciate the wider contribution each character makes.
Calling the last few pages a cliff-hanger doesn’t seem quite accurate here, but my poor emotions will tell you otherwise… It is shocking, heart-breaking, and unexpectedly bold. Not that further reason was needed to be back for the final instalment, but this certainly seals the deal.
Rating: 4.5 stars

Hmm... Love square? Interesting. Glad you enjoyed, I still need to start this series.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading,

Love to see that high rating and happy to hear you say this a brilliant sequel that avoids second book syndrome it seems that either they get it right the second time or they don't. I have got to get this series! Thanks for the wonderful review, Sam.
ReplyDeleteoh, that ending sounds painful! I will find out when I read it! Glad you enjoyed it :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant review, Sam! I still need to read Legend but I haven't been interested up until now. I am glad you enjoyed the sequel - some second books can be really disappointing. The love square sounds interesting. Thanks for posting :)
ReplyDeleteI skimmed parts of your review because I haven't read either of these. I'm really curious though. I'm glad the second was even BETTER than the first. That doesn't always happen- rare actually.
ReplyDeleteAnd the ending sounds very intense. I must find out!

Ah!!!!!! Wonderful review Sam!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad this book is enjoyable, with many great characters! You definitely convinced me to try this series! Its awesome when authors become better writers. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad this series is such a success for you, Sam. As you know, I wasn't a fan of the first novel and won't be continuing the series, especially with hints of a love triangle or square, but I'm glad that Lu keeps those to a minimum. Excellent review, dear! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that this book was filled with just as much as the first book was. I usually don't like dual povs in one book but I actually enjoyed it in Legend so I hope I continue to love the series. I'm a little worried about a love square though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great review, glad you enjoyed the book! :)
I like that the focus is on the characters and not on the aspect of romance. When I read about "the world-building is sharper, more precise", my mind went "so this is the HD version" and I went gaga for a minute. As I mentioned on Goodreads, I loved all the praises that you're sharing. It's always great when I see a raving review from you!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed Prodigy too! I agree, I find the writing so gripping and engaging whether it's Day or June narrating. Love your review, and glad you rated it so highly! :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't even realize this one came out until it landed on my doorstep, I think it was last Tuesday? School has been keeping me THAT occupied, it's crazy! But I recall thinking that Legend was good, with some potential, so it's great to hear that some of that potential has been capitalized on in this book. It's so great to see that there's more development in this book than the first one, that was my main complaint. Lack of character development, lack of world building, and TOO fast-paced were my three main complaints. And it seems like they've all been pretty much fixed in Prodigy, which is so exciting. =)
ReplyDeleteFantastic review, Sam, you've gotten me so psyched to read this one!
I'm glad you thought this one was more polished than Legend, Sam. I managed to win a copy of this one in a contest and am looking forward to it arriving since I loved Legend. Apparently, there's a steamy bathroom scene that I need to read ...
ReplyDeleteI already knew you enjoyed it but lovely review! I totally agree about it being more polished than legend. Can't wait for the third book.

Now I'm scared about the ending.. and I have read a few reviews which make me truly anxious and scared to pick it up!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sad though that June and Day are so much apart. It's so common for second books, but I do not need to like it :) Can't wait!
I've heard great things about this series! Glad you are enjoying it. Oh I do hope it doesn't turn into a love triangle/square as I hate those and hope to start the series soon!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what's wrong with me! I honestly liked the first few chapters, but when I realized they would be separated, I put this one on hold and just didn't go back to it. I'm unreasonable like that sometimes. It didn't help that someone else complained about the ending, so I figured the later I read it, the less I'll suffer while waiting for the final book.
ReplyDeleteThe worldbuilding reminded me too much of the North Korean situation, to be honest, but it didn't bother me. It wasn't until the whole Elector Primo situation and Tess that I got really annoyed.
Ah, well, I'll go back to it soon enough. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.
Fantastic review, Sam! :)

ReplyDeleteYESSSSS! This avoids the "second book syndrome". (I am sick of sequels that fall victim to this!) Lu really impressed me with the world-building in Legend and I'm glad it's even better in Prodigy :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard about this "love square" from reading other reviews....but I'm glad it's not too pronounced. (Tess?!?! I mean, isn't she like 12? :/) Anyway, so thrilled you enjoyed this Sam! Fantastic review<3
I LOVED THIS TOO SAM!! lol Sorry, just had to shout that out. I'm dying for the next one! Awesome review lovely!
ReplyDeleteFor me, LEGEND was just an okay book - nothing the brag about, but not too shabby either. I admit that I wasn't really looking forward to the sequel that much, but - wow. So glad the sequel lived up to your expectations! The love square has me feeling both cautious and intrigued at the same time... But I'm happy that the characters were more thoroughly developed here than in the first book.
ReplyDeleteA little more excited for PRODIGY, now! I'll see if I'm up to get it or not. Great review as always, Sam. :)
Now this is a series that I have to get my butt in gear and finally read. Your reviews always make me want to pick up the book...like yesterday. Thanks Sam :-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this series yet but I've heard a lot of great things about it. I really need to start picking up some of the books you review! Great review :)
ReplyDeleteEeee, why am I always here saying I can't read your review yet but I'm pleased we agree on a rating?! But here I am, and I'm saying just that, hah. I'll read your GR review when I've posted some sort of review myself. :) I'm so happy you liked it, though!

Great review, Sam. <3 Sigh. I am glad you loved this book, now that I have read it myself and given it five stars (A) lol :) I found it to be amazing as well. Still pissed at love square, but it wasn't that bad :) But oh. I didn't like the separation :\ Did not approve. But sigh. Day is just perfect. And June is amazing. I agree, Prodigy was much better than Legend in world building, etc :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoy this series so much, Sam! Especially when I have Legend to read soon, it gives me a little more faith that Lu will continue to improve and progress as an author.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! :)
Why have I not read this series, this sounds amazing Sam and I want to experience the ending of this one!
ReplyDeleteI AGREE WITH THIS REVIEW! It was better than Legend and I love how we get to know the characters more. I think I scared people when I said "love square" in my review so I'm glad you said it...the way you did, if that makes sense? I'm not feeling very coherent right now. Fantastic review!
ReplyDeleteGAHHH! I need the first book! So bad. So, so bad. -sigh-
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, that ending!!! Painful, and heartbreaking! It must be fixed, Sam. Must!! I don't know if I'll ever write proper review for this because it broke my heart so much. Lovely and brilliant review. :)
ReplyDeleteDonna recently sent me a copy of this. So I can't wait to dive right in, I'm really worried about the ending now though, but thanks for the heads up as I will take this time to prepare for it. I hope it's not too heartbreaking, my poor heart has been pushed to the limit recently. Another brilliant review Sam!
ReplyDeleteAHHHH....I still need to read this series! I have heard so many amazing things about them, and I am definitely curious to see how they turn out, especially with what you described of the ending to this. Very curious. Plus, I really like the unique plot and the characters sounds fantastic. I can't wait to read this! Awesomesauce review, Sam! :D I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Everyone seems to have read and loved Legend but it never really appealed to me. Now I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing out. Great review Sam.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear that this is a good sequel!! I'm looking forward to reading it a lot more, now!
ReplyDeleteYAY! looking forward to read this one. I loved the first book and excited to read Prodigy. Thanks for amazing review :D
