Review: The Gathering Dark by Christine Johnson

Title: The Gathering Dark
Author: Christine Johnson
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published: Feb 14, 2013
Buy: The Book Depository

The Gathering Dark, unfortunately, is not nearly as intriguing as it sounds. With the main character plagued by obscure and mysterious hallucinations – trees appearing indoors, dark moving patterns appearing on a stranger’s arms – this book is simply a long and tedious journey to finding out the how and why. The concept, once revealed, is actually rather imaginative. By then, however, it is far too late to be truly redeeming.

It is almost like reading two different books here. The first half is a slow trek uphill, with a fairly uninteresting main character for company. Keira is difficult to describe as there is little that is genuinely distinguishable about her outside of the hallucinations. Calling her dull may be a little harsh, but the word is disappointingly accurate here. She has a strict schedule with her beloved piano, which isn’t at all a bad thing (pianos are cool), but the excessive descriptions and thoughts centred around her musical abilities become extremely tiring after a short while. There is only so much you can say about a piano before I lose interest entirely. It perhaps doesn’t help that the bare minimum takes place during the first couple hundred pages of the book. And even less so that the writing is a fraction too awkward:

“The oily-smooth voice cracked her focus like an egg smashing against a windowpane.”

The figurative language is not a consistent thing in this book, admittedly, but, when presented with a simile like the one above (on the first page, no less), it is not too difficult to feel the need to locate other equally ridiculous sentences. The dialogue, too, is lacking authenticity, especially when love interest Walker is a participant in the conversation. The two, perhaps not too surprisingly, are inexplicably drawn to each other, and bond over their shared love for music. Walker is puppy-like at times and (what I imagine is supposed to be) dangerously enigmatic at others. Whilst not a staggeringly poor character, he is incredibly lacklustre and forgettable. My feelings towards him, and to the romance in general, in fact, are mostly of indifference.

Once the reasons for Keira’s hallucinations are finally revealed, the book takes a far more interesting turn. While the storyline during the final part of the book is not of a particularly high standard compared to several other and better books that involve a similar concept, it is a great deal of an improvement from the first half, plot-wise. (Mild spoilers ahead). A few aspects are weakly explained, however, even when taking into account the uncertainty of dark matter, such as why Darkside is clearer to Keira when in physical contact with Walker. Ignoring these, the science-fiction edge is a clever touch and fairly original, even if the build-up to the introduction is far too elongated.

Despite the brief turn-around towards the end, The Gathering Dark is not a book I can easily recommend. My first book by Christine Johnson will now most likely be my last.

  1. Hrm, that's sad because I love the title. Well, they can't all be 4-5 star books sadly. Thank you

  2. Okay, lol, that is NOT a writing for me (A) I need good writing. I must admit to having heard about people loving this book, but never have I read the summary. And after reading your review, I won't do that :) Thank you for sharing. <3 Yeah. This book seems boring. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but also a bit glad, cause now I won't buy it :D lol :)

  3. I've read one book by this author and if I recall, that wasn't too bad. It was a long time ago, though. This one just sounds...way too disappointing. Writing like that is not something that would draw me in and the characters sound far too forgettable. I'm sorry this was so disappointing, Sam; it's a shame that the better part of the book was too little too late. Lovely review. :)

  4. Aw, I'm sorry that this book was disappointing. THE GATHERING DARK definitely sounded intriguing, but needing to go through a tedious journey just to find out why is already putting me off! I agree that the writing - based on the quote you gave, at least - is kind of strange...

All in all, TGD doesn't sound like something I'd wholly enjoy (I think our tastes in books are quite similar, haha!), but thanks for the helpful review, Sam!

  5. Sorry it wasn't what you wanted, honestly doesn't sound like one for me either, despite the promise of the premise.

  6. eep judging from your review, it doesn't sound like it's for me either! I hate it when the book SOUNDS more intriguing than it already is. also, this confused me slightly for a bit since I know that's the original UK title for Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. it sounds like it has its interesting moments but ultimately falls flat. thanks for your honest review, Sam!

  7. Color me disappointed Sam! I was so hoping this book was going to be amazing, it's a shame Keira is so uninteresting and the first half is so tedious because it sounds like there are some interesting things that happen in the second half. But like you said, by the time you get there you're sort of indifferent to it all because nothing has grabbed you and drawn you in. Shoot! Fabulous review though:):)

  8. Ugh.. Well, that's unfortunate - 2 stars? Hmhh.. Not a good sign. I thought it had so much potential, but that was before you mentioned all of those flaws. Now it seems like a pretty cover with a louzy story. Hmhh.. I wish you would have enjoyed it more and the first half of the book was more of a crazy roller coaster of awesomeness rather than being horrible. Hate it when that happens! I often cannot even bring myself to finish a book then, so a standing ovation for you for finishing the book! Hope you have better luck with your next book, Sam! :( :)

  9. Aww, I'm so sorry this was a disappointment! I feel like novels that deal with psychological issues - hallucinations, etc. - always wind up being so common, but the gems are so rare and far in-between. I was never too keen to pick this up, so I've been spared disappointment on that front, but I hope your next read is more satisfying, dear!

  10. Maybe an abridged version would be better, huh? :-)

  11. I was eyeing this the other day and wondering about it. Such a lovely cover another case of great cover, bad book, right? I know what you mean about getting weird metaphors it is a total turn off for me as well. Thanks as always for your honest review, Sam!

  12. I think the concept of the story is quite unique but I'm not sure if I'd enjoy reading similes like the one you included. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, Sam!

  13. I don't actually know too much about this book, but I'm sorry that it wasn't for you. I think it's great that you can make yourself finish a book when you're really not enjoying it, especially when you have so much to get through. I just can't do it. Great honest review Sam :)

  14. I'm sorry The Gathering Dark didn't work out for you Sam, but I think all the earlier problems you mentioned; the over descriptive paragraphs and unforgettable characters would probably bug the heck out of me too, but well done for continuing with the book, I'm glad it was able to pick up for you slightly! Thanks for taking one for the team Sam! :)

  15. Aw, I'm so disappointed! As a pianist, I thought I would love this one. That quote, however, as well as the other problems you mention have me running for the hills! Yikes! Thank you for your honest and wonderful review!

  16. Hmmm, I've been a little iffy whether to read this because I picked up Claire de Lune aaaaaages ago and couldn't get into it. I think I only read a little before putting it down. I can't say that the prospect of forgettable characters and awkward writing is inspiring me to pick this up any time soon. Sorry your first taste of her work did not end on a sweet note, but I guess you can't love 'em all. Fabulous review, Sam!

  17. I don't know why I find this funny but I cracked up so hard when I read "pianos are cool" HAHAHAHHAA Oh and this too There is only so much you can say about a piano before I lose interest entirely.
    You've just made my day!!
I remember adding this on GR because I saw you were reading it, and looks like I'll be taking it down now. I've no patience for forgettable characters and awkwardly written paragraphs these days so I'll skip this for sure. Thanks for the honest review Sam!<3

  18. I could live with such a slow-developing, strange story if the writing is good enough, but based on the quote (seriously?) this one goes well into the awkward territory. I'm tired of characters being "inexplicably drawn to each other", too.
The cover is so lovely, it probably would have pulled me in, so thanks for saving me from this one, Sam! I'm sorry you wasted your time, though.

  19. To be honesty with you when saw this cover and the title I wanted to read it. Luckily I've read your review so I won't do that mistake now. Seriously this sounds like a frustrating read. I mean I love when the author is imaginative but you need to have some logic in all that :) I'm sorry it disappointed!

  20. Damn, I was hoping this would be good! :(
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it - the story does sound pretty interesting, but to know that the author wasted its potential is frustrating -_-

Oh well. One book down in my TBR list!
Thanks for the honest review, Sam \o

  21. Sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you. The language does sound a little bit awkward. And sorry you won't be returning to this author. I know the feeling about first impressions creating a lasting influence.

Great review, Sam and I'll probably give this one a pass! :)

  22. Aww boo-urns! This sounded so good, too! But that sentence made me almost spit my coffee teehee. It's frustrating almost when the last part of the book is really good that if it wasn't for the characters and slow start it could have been really great you know. Sounds like a great premise that lacked a little too much in its execution *thumbs down*

  23. This is the second review I've seen of this book and both were negative. It's such a gorgeous cover. It's so misleading!!! That's just not right. I can't believe she's dull she has hallucination's for Pete's sake! You already have an interesting part about you just run with it.
HAHAHA!!! That quote. Someone's teacher spent too much time teaching simile's that the author must think they are a must for books to come up with that one. That sounds harsh but it is funny to me.

It's saying something when if even after the twist you still rated this 2 stars. Sigh... such potential. I might look at more reviews to see if others have a different point of view but I don't think I will be going out of my way to read this book :/

  24. This one definitely had me intrigued, and I was planning on checking it out from the library, at the bare minimum. But now, I think I'll be staying away from this one. I mean, it just sounds... dull. While yes, I AM a piano player, I think even I would get tired of mindless talk about the piano. Because what you say is true- you can only say so much about a piano before it gets boring, and that's coming from someone who has a passion for the piano. The characters sound lackluster, and that writing? Just plain ol' strange.

I'm sorry this one was so disappointing, Sam! I think I'll have to pass this one up, unfortunately. Thanks for such a lovely and honest review, though! <3

  25. I might not be able to finish this book since I don't like a dull protagonist. -Sigh- I have high hopes for the one. Thanks for the great review, Sam.

  26. Nope, lack luster characters and a weak plot..not for me. Thanks Sam :)

  27. That's unfortunate this didn't live up to expectations, Sam. It was a long book, too! You need to read something you know is good, just as a break from all these mediocre reads. Thanks for the helpful review Sam. :)

  28. This kind of sounded like Mara Dyer to me with the really weird hallucinations and wondering what the heck is going on. Part of me likes that but then part of me gets annoyed and just wants answers. I'm glad the answer does turn out to be imaginative but too bad it was such a slow journey to get there.

  29. Awh, what a shame! The writing-style does sound a bit odd and I'm not sure if I would really like that.. I totally trust your opinion Sam and I will stay away from this book. I know for sure now that I will not like it, so thanks for the warning and great review :)

  30. Too bad you didn't like The Gathing Dark! The hallucionations and weird occurrences sound very alluring. Strangely I had to find out that books with too much music talk just don't work for me (If I Stay or Finding Sky). And Boo for the boring love interest! Thanks for your honest review:)

  31. Well it's a good thing this one wasn't even on my radar, because now I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Great review, Sam.

  32. I'm sorry this book was disappointing, Sam! That is such a shame because, like you said, the book DOES sound intriguing. I don't think I'll be reading this then... :/ The cover is really beautiful though! Thanks for the honest review.

  33. That quote had me laughing a little there. It's a shame this turned out to be a disappointing book! I really liked the cover and hoped it might be as good inside, but it seems like most people haven't really been impressed. Sorry it didn't work for you sam. but great review!

  34. Oh no! That's awful. I had this one on my TBR list, I guess I wont be picking it up anytime soon. I mean I totally understand what you mean. Yes detail is good but not when it's overly done and on top of that detail of the littlest things, in your case a piano! LOL ;p This reminds me so much of Prince of Wolves I reviewed. Total disappointment. :(

I'm sorry this didn't turn out so..well...good for you.

Brilliant, honest review Sam! LOVE IT! :D

  35. I hate hearing that a book was so difficult to get through, but it happens! Thanks for your honest thoughts. It's a bummer that the second half of the novel came a little too late to make this one better.

  36. Aw, another book with a pretty cover that doesn't live up to expectations :( I think I'll pass on this one. It doesn't sound very interesting and if that one sentence is an indication of the writing, has odd language.

  37. So glad that I read your review since the cover hooked my interest. From what you said, I wouldn't be able to last through it, so why bother? Love the review!

  38. I don't think it's harsh to call her dull. :D This was a DNF for me at maybe...150 pages? Bleh. Likely my last book by this author as well.

  39. Aw, such a shame that you couldn't get into this one, though I can hardly say that I blame you! I'm not at all a fan of boring protagonists, and like Wendy, I probably wouldn't have stuck it out to the end like you did (though the fact that it gets better at the end is encouraging).
