Waiting on Wednesday (#20)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog feature hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights future releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

I have had my eye on this week's WoW title for a while now. The cover hasn't been released yet, and I'm far too impatient to wait for it, so you will have to make do with the book description only this week. The author has been described as the next J.K Rowling, which, let's face it, is a description near impossible to meet, but I am definitely interested in checking out her book, The Bone Season. This article states that it landed a six-figure deal with Bloomsbury.

Here is the book description:
The Bone Season begins in 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. She works as an envoy between secret cells: she drops in an out of people's minds. For Paige is a lucid dreamer, a clairvoyant, and in her world, the world of Scion, she commits high treason simply by breathing. It is raining the day her life changes forever. Attacked, kidnapped and transported to Oxford, a city that has been kept secret for two hundred years, she meets Warden, a Rephaite with dark honey skin and heavy-lidded yellow eyes. He is the single most beautiful and frightening thing she has every laid eyes on – and he will become her "keeper".
Title: The Bone Season
Author: Samantha Shannon
Expected Release: Sept 12, 2013

Quite honestly, I think labelling someone the next J.K Rowling can only result in disappointment (unless she really IS that good), so I don't want to think of her like that. The book sounds great though and can't wait to see how it does. What do you think?

If you're taking part in Waiting on Wednesday, feel free to leave me a link to your post! :)

  1. Wow, I've never heard of this book before but it sounds phenomenal. The criminal underworld of London? Lucid dreaming? "She drops in and out of minds"? Sold. :) It sort of sounds like the movie Inception, now that I think about it. :) Awesome pick Sam, and thanks for alerting us of the wonderful premise!

  2. I've never heard of this book either, but like Leanne says it sounds awesome. You do get kind of worried when an author is labelled as similar to another, so fingers crossed this meets your expectations! I can't wait for the cover reveal now, I wonder what they will decide to go with, from the synopsis alone, the opportunities are endless! :) Another fab pick Sam!

  3. Ooh I'm curious. I hate when debut authors get compared to bigger, way more well-known authors because it really can only lead to dissapointment for a lot of people. Regardless, I think I'd enjoy this one! sounds pretty good.

  4. I hate to be that cynical person who ruins everything, but there can never be another J.K. Rowling! ;) I absolutely love the synopsis of this one though, so it sounds amazing! Brodie, at Eleusinian Mysteries, actually has a feature where she showcases upcoming novels without a cover yet, so this post reminded me of that a bit. Anyway, I'm excited about the release for this one now and the title is quite chilling as well. Wonderful pick this week, Sam! :D

  5. Oh wow, the book as the next J.K Rowling? That is impressive. It's really hard to find an author like J.K Rowling who writes such brilliant books but I'm definitely going to have to look out for this book since it sounds really interesting!

    Awesome WoW post, Sam! ♥

  6. Wow. that book sounds really original and I love the mysterious, foreboding synopsis. I'm sure this book cant match J.k Rowling (her books are one of a kind) but I definitely am interested in it. Wonderful pick Sam!

  7. This sounds like a seriously awesome book, even though I'm sure it can't be the next JK Rowling. ;) It got an impressive deal though, so I'm convinced it must be really great! This book sounds super unique and unlike anything I've ever read before, and if the writing style is as good as it seems, then I'm sure I'll fall in love with this books.

Thanks for sharing Sam!! This is SO going on my TBR! <3

  8. Wow, there's not even a cover it's so far in advance. This sounds very original, I can't even think of any other book that seems similar. Great pick Sam. :)

  9. I've never heard of this one before, but I totally agree with you that saying that this writer is like J.K. Rowling is quite impossible! Hope this one doesn't disappoint. :)

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. That.Sounds.Fantastic!!!!!! Slipping in and out people's mind? Protagonist is 19? This all sounds perfect!
But... labeling someone the next JK is just marketing and I think it might even hurt more than it does good. Who could live up to her hype?

  12. I just wanted to say that "the next J.K Rowling" (or any other popular author) is never good description. I always end up disappointed! But who knows maybe this one will surprise! We'll find out in a year! :D

  13. Seems like an awesome book :D Can't wait to see the cover for it ;) Thank you for sharing. <3 Hope you'll like it when it comes out ;)

  14. I must admit I tend to keep away from books marketed as versions of other, insanely successful books. So when I see 'The next Hunger Games', I'm more likely not to read it. But this has a bit of Inception, a bit of Wake by Lisa McMann, all things I abolsutely adore. I'm in.

  15. Wow, this sounds really good. Although, like you, I don't want to think that she's the "next J.K. Rowling" since I might end up disappointed. But to have landed a six-figure deal from a well known publisher and be featured in dailymail, I guess that shows that the author is indeed quite impressive. Let's see when this comes out. Thanks for sharing this, Sam. Awesome pick! ;)

  16. Wow I haven't heard about this but now I'm definitely going to try and get my hands on this..quite impressive to get a six figure deal from a well-known publisher as well but the ''next J.K Rowling''...hopefully it won't lead in disaster..;) x
Great pick thanks for sharing. :)

  17. I haven't heard anything about this book but I think sometimes the comparisons between authors or their work can be a bad thing because it raises expectations too much!

  18. The next J.K. Rowling? Where have I heard this before? Oh well, maybe she is or not but I don't think it's really healthy to be compare to Rowling. Anyway, I still can't wait for the cover and this one sounds too good to pass up.

Care to stop by my WoW?

  19. Wow. That sounds good. And labeled the next J.K. Rowling? This I have to read. Too bad it won't be out till next year, I might forget its existence. D:

  22. Wow I haven't heard of this one but I am really intrigued by it. A little scared because like you said anything listed as the next Harry Potter can be a complete let down, but I think I am going to grab this one up when it comes out. Great find!!

    Check out our WOW

  23. The new J.K Rowling, will be hard to live up to that expectation! I'm definitely intrigued and a bit 'scared' I can't wait to try it out.

  24. "Quite honestly, I think labelling someone the next J.K Rowling can only result in disappointment (unless she really IS that good), so I don't want to think of her like that."

I agree. I'm going to pretend no one is calling her that so my expectations aren't so high as to be completely unattainable. This book sounds absolutely brilliant though, thanks so much for putting it on my radar Sam! I want to throttle you a little bit though (not seriously) since we have OVER A YEAR to wait for this book. That's just painful.

  25. I have to agree, they cannot label her the next J.K. Rowling, especially when she's still around and publishing books. And I think it's unfair to the author to live up to such a standard with J.K. Rowling's reputation being as big as it is.

Still, I think this book sounds AMAZING and I have to thank you with lots of squeals and jumping about for raising it to my attention because I really want to read this book.

It sounds really interesting and different book and a tiny bit sinister. I mean her "keeper" damn, that sounds creepy and thrilling.

However, how can we wait THAT long for this book. *Sigh*

    Great pick, Sam! :)

  26. Oh I can see why you're so excited for this one, it sounds awesome. But September 2013, a long wait :( But can there be another J.K. Rowling? I don't know...

  29. This does sound really good, but you're right, I'm a little hesitant about the claim of the author being the next J.K. That's a pretty big title to live up to. Still, can't wait to see what the author brings us! Fab pick, Sam! :)

  30. The next J.K Rwoling?! Sounds promising! Though I agree it could be a let down. However, I absolutely love the synopsis! I haven't heard of this before, I'll have to keep an eye out for it, I'd love to read it. Thanks for sharing, Sam! And I hope we both get to read it soon. (: <3

  31. I sincerely hope this author doesn't disappoint, although, like you said, it'll be REALLY hard for her to be "the next J.K. Rowling". Nonetheless, this book sounds very interesting! Adding it to my TBR list. Great choice, Sam :D

  32. Wow - the next J.K Rowling?! I MUST READ IT! :O I can't believe you have to wait over a year for it... I hope it doesn't disappoint. Great choice this week! :) xx

  36. That's a pretty bold statement to say she's the next Rowling. I'm sure it's to generate tons of buzz and excitement, I would hate that to be said about me. Too much pressure! :) The book does sound like it will be good though.

  37. THE BONE SEASON!! The Aussie publisher emailed out a press release just after the deal was made and OMG! *EXCITED BRODIE* I do agree with you on labelling someone the next J.K Rowling; it's not really fair to her because people WILL compare now. I hope it doesn't affect the book in any way. But if she IS as big and as incredible as Rowling... holy crap, we're in for a ride <3

It sounds EXACTLY like the kind of book I want to read right now! So naturally it's a year away *sob*

  43. Well WOW I'm excited, thanks for bringing this to my attention! But comparing her to the next J.K makes me very nervous as nothing compares to me! Thanks for sharing :)

  44. OMG!! I remember receiving an email from Bloomsbury about this book- and I remember this book being called the next J.K Rowling!! I am super-duper excited for this...(I personally don't like calling anyone the next "J.K Rowling" - it will, like you said, result in disappointment) BUT I'm still REALLY curious about this<3 heheee Awesome pick Sam!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree completely - you really can't compare someone to J.K. Rowling - it's probably not true at all... besides, wouldn't the author want her own unique voice that makes a name for itself? Maybe yes, maybe no - am unsure what I think about this one.
