Review: Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Author: Jamie McGuire
Publisher: Atria Books
Released: Aug 14, 2012

Beautiful Disaster is a very fitting title for this book. The relationship between Abby and Travis is hardly smooth-sailing in this story (I’m sure most people are aware of that by now), but there is something to be said about watching two people fall in love. For some, I imagine it is easier to look past the disaster and focus on the beautiful. For me, this book was less about the nature of the relationship and more about the execution.

I didn’t enter this book expecting a healthy romance between polished characters (and I doubt the author intended to write it as such). As Abby said so herself, she and Travis are a dysfunctional pair. They are the same ends of two magnets being forced in to place; there is a want for the two to be able to be together, but at the same time, a realisation that they shouldn’t be. I am a firm believer of romance, of happy endings, but I also believe there has to be a convincing case for such progression in the storyline. Where Beautiful Disaster is concerned, I needed feasible growth and improvement in both characters for me to support their struggles. I am not entirely convinced that I got this, and this is where Beautiful Disaster disappoints.

Travis is, undoubtedly, a very controversial character. He turned out to be exactly as I expected: volatile and full of aggression. There is a brief glimpse into his past that provides a (somewhat flimsy) explanation of his behaviour. According to his father, ‘he was never the same’ after his mother passed away and ‘he quit trying to love people after that’. I wish there had been more of an emphasis on this aspect. Maybe then, it would have been easier to understand and appreciate his character further. Abby, on the other hand, was not the character I had been anticipating her to be. I think the book description is a little misleading here. For someone who doesn’t drink and has a closet full of cardigans – there’s nothing wrong with a good cardigan, by the way – she was more like Travis than I think she recognises. Her irresponsibility made her a little hypocritical at times. It was difficult to like either of them at first, and, unfortunately, little changed by the end of the book.

Character issues aside, my main concern with this book is the disordered plot. Detour after drama-filled detour twisted this story into a complicated mess. It seemed to me that as long as there was a situation occurring that could pull Travis and Abby apart (or put them back together again), then it had to be included. I was quite convinced I had reached the end at one point, but then we had a fire, a trip to Vegas, a family reunion… it was endless, but more importantly, it was pointless. The on-again, off-again scenarios were repetitive, excessive and, quite frankly, annoying. Pacing and planning were quite clearly issues here.

Despite all of that, there were small occasions where I actually felt this book might fall into the ‘guilty pleasure’ pen. For a few fleeting moments, the problems in this book were acknowledged and Abby and Travis were acting accordingly. It was all quick to collapse however, thanks to the drama-fest of a plot line. Still, I think those appropriately emotional moments will reach out to readers more familiar with this sort of story. In the end, it proved not to be something I easily enjoyed, and I guess I’m not totally surprised. Curiosity made me read this book. After all, Beautiful Disaster has over 15,000 5-star ratings on Goodreads, and while it isn’t meant for me, I’m sure it will continue to generate fans.

Rating: 2.5 stars

  1. I like the honesty behind your review. It's been garnering mixed opinions from many of the bloggers I follow, but I am still morbidly curious about it.

  2. Sorry this book wasn't for you, Sam! The cover really matches the title, and I was intrigued before. The pacing of the plot sounds very fustrating, and hypocrtitical characters annoy me too. Thanks for your honesty, great review! :)

  3. Most reviews I have read for Beautiful Disaster say that they couldn't warm to the characters either. And the disordered plot sounds like it would grate on my nerves like hell.

Thanks for your honest review, Sam. I won't be picking this up, although I'm going to have to be dragged away from it whenever I see the stunning front cover! (I'm a sucker for pretty covers!) :) xxx

  4. Very well put review, Sam! Sorry it didn't work for you. I remember reading this and liking it, that was before I've read so many books, and now I realized that my self now would probably end up not liking this too. Hehe. Fantastic review! :)

  5. Oh, I'm so sorry you didn't enjoyed it :S I really love this book <3 But I agree with the drama - sometimes they were pointless. Dunno. Anyway, great review Sam! :)

  6. Aww, Sam! I tried to read this book also few weeks ago and just couldn't get into the story. Although I know that many people have fallen in love with this story, I think this book is just not for me either. I didn't fully understand why they fall in love, and you can't say that the characters are easy to like. Anyway, beautiful reviews as always, my dear! <3 And like you said: there’s nothing wrong with a good cardigan! ;)

PS: I have cardigans in every color of the rainbow and I'm proud of it. :P

  7. I'm really glad I came over to read this review. I have to admit to curiosity because of the drama that surrounds this book and author on Goodreads and Amazon. I don't think it is for me but I like the fact that you explained what didn't work for you in a way that made me understood why other people might like it. Yours is the first review I've read that wasn't full of love or full of hatred for it.

  8. I did not grab this when everyone was getting it on NG. I just don't know how I would feel but my gut tells me I would come out feeling much like you. Yes, I have seen the countless glowing reviews and I have read about the controversy and read many reviews like yours, Sam. I am not a huge fan of drama laden plot lines. Sure I am certain there are some good points but overall I think this book would not be a good fit for me, Thanks for your honesty, Sam!

  9. Sorry you didn't like it as much Sam :( The characters weren't why I loved this book either :P I liked the plot more, but loathed Travis's possessive nature, it turned me off. Great review! :D

  11. Oh, goodness, I've seen so many reviews for this book lately. All of them seem to be of very strong feelings--either love or hate. Your review is a bit more mild (and much more competent than some "omg gushh" or "burn this book" reviews, haha). This book definitely sounds like one that would annoy me. Abby and Travis's relationship with each other sounds too complicated and the back-and-forth plot line would definitely make me sick. However, the high rating on GR does make me believe that a lot of people do love this book. Wonderful and honest review, Sam! :)

  12. oh God... I thought you were going to love this book from all the positive reviews it has been getting... thanks for your honest review Sam, though i'll still give it a try!

  13. Love your review! It's a lot more calm and well-thought out than mine! I just did my review today too and I really hated Abby. I agree. there's very little character development. Travis's background wasn't explained well, neither was Abby's. The little bit of background information with Abby doesn't explain why she things Travis is bad for her. Also, the drama-filled plot served no purpose. There's no progression from one point to another, just one thing that happened one after another and suddenly, when she reached her word limit, it's time for the happily ever after. Thanks for the review!

  14. Very well-written review, Sam! I love that your review shows both the positive and negative aspects of this novel. While I didn't enjoy it at all, I do agree that aspects of it could easily fall into the "guilty-pleasure" category! Wonderful review, Sam, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! :D

  15. Great review Sam, I enjoyed the chaos of this plot. You made excellent points and gave an honest, fair review.

  16. Thanks for sharing such a balanced review with us, Sam. I have to admit all those 5 star reviews encouraged me to buy the Kindle version back when it was self-pub'd yet it's still waiting to be read because I've since read a lot of less-then-5-star reviews.

The addition of unnecessary drama really puts me off, I can't stand drama and non-communication especially if it's the driving force of the story. I will get around to reading this but I won't be in a rush!

  17. Man, this book has been all over the place with so many different feelings on it. I've been so tempted to read it, but just can't bring myself to do it. I like major drama in doses, and I've had my fill for awhile. lol. Great review, Sam.

  18. A very thoughtful and insightful review you have written, Sam. After all the controversy surrounding this book that has been primarily focused on the relationship between the two love interests, it is fascinating to read your take on a different aspect of this book entirely; the execution. Either way, I have no interest in reading this book, but your review was a pleasure to read like always!

  19. Honest review, Sam. I wasn't sure whether to read this or not, but when I got a review copy of it I ended up reading it and surprisingly it was quite a 'good' book. However, what was the major letdown for me as the second half of the book . . . it all sort of fell apart plot-wise. And Travis . . . well let's just say I didn't approve of him all so much. :)

  20. I couldn't even finish this book and this basically sums up my feelings, "For a few fleeting moments, the problems in this book were acknowledged and Abby and Travis were acting accordingly. It was all quick to collapse however, thanks to the drama-fest of a plot line." ALSO UM THE PIGEON THING? How is that a cute nickname? NO. EW.

  21. I loved this book, but I can see why you didn't like it. It's one of those books where I've noticed you either love it or hate it.... well not hate it, just strongly dislike. But yeah, I can see where you're coming from. I liked that you included positive and negative aspects of the story!

    Great review! :D

  22. I'm not at all interested in reading this one and everything in your review makes me glad that I haven't bothered to request it, Sam. I hope your next read is more enjoyable :)

  23. I am one of those people who smell drama and run the other way so I was never even tempted to read this. BUT, I feel relieved to know that the actual content wouldn't sit well with me either, so I'm not really missing out.
The type of relationship portrayed here is a major dealbreaker for me. I would probably get annoyed and abandon it after a hundred pages.
    Wonderful review, Sam!

  24. This is a book you either love or hate it :) While you didn't hate it completely, I get your point. And no, there was no intention to portray a healthy relationship. Both had their demons to deal with and struggled hard to be together, and failed.. and tried again.

I was enthralled by this book! I loved every second and wish I could go back and read it again, but I understand why it isn't for you!

  25. Great review, Sam. I pretty much had the same effect to this book as you, except maybe I hated it a little bit more. The drama was a little over the top like you said.
I agree about part of it being guilty pleasure though.

  26. "I imagine it is easier to look past the disaster and focus on the beautiful." - loved that, so true. Beautiful Disaster is something I have been seeing everywhere lately and I would love to read myself. Sorry you didn't really get this one, you can't get em all. Thanks for a detailed, honest review, Sam! :)

  27. Eh, I'm kind of regretting that I requested this from NetGalley now. BEAUTIFUL DISASTER has been getting loads of mixed reviews, and I understand why you gave this only 2 stars. Disordered plots confuse the heck out of me, and flimsy characters with equally flimsy pasts? *steers away*

Thanks for the honest review, though, Sam! :)

  28. I have this to read, but I've heard that people either LOVE it or really hate it. I don't know which side I'll be on, after reading your review I'm keen to find out!

It really annoys me when everything is just DRAMA, and there's nothing else. Not only does it get boring and predictable, but it also makes everything so much less realistic.

    Thanks for the review, Sam!<3

  29. Aawwwwwww Sam! Don't worry, most people I've come across feel the same way as you<3 I agree with everything you mentioned, but I guess this just happened to be my cup of tea! I really didn't care how dysfunctional the relationship was, nor the disordered plot (well...actually a lack of a solid plot imo)- there was something about the writing that just...clicked. Thank you for the honest review Sam! I love reading different opinions on books I loveee<3

  30. Great review Sam. Even though every situation was different, I still felt it was kind of repetitive and at one point I wanted to just stop but forced myself to go on.

  32. "For someone who doesn’t drink and has a closet full of cardigans – there’s nothing wrong with a good cardigan, by the way"

*dies* That might be my favorite line in a review ever Sam. I love how you came to the defense of cardigans everywhere! I've been seeing really mixed reviews for this one and it has me dying to read this book. I wish we got more than a "he wasn't the same after his mother" explanation for his behavior, but I'm intrigued by both him and Abby:) Gorgeous review!

  33. I'm sorry you didn't like the characters that much. Travis HAS been really controversial, and I have this book so I don't know how I'll take to it. Hopefully I like it a little better and I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as you wanted to :( Great review though!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shame the characters didn't grow on you. It always irks me when I can't warm to them or there's no sign of character growth/development :(

Not particularly liking the sound of Travis, I hate aggressive characters and the plot sounds a bit flimsily put together too.

Probably won't be picking this up any time soon but thank you for the lovely, honest review, Sam <3

  35. Sounds like a book I'll be avoiding. I can't say it ever really caught my eye as I wanted to read it despite the hype and the down sides it just didn't sound for me.

I have to agree with Jenny above about the cardigan quote, it made me smile. Shame about the plot, sounds like a case of whiplash. haha.

    Lovely review! :)

  36. Lovely review, Sam! I'm not a fan of this book... I just don't like Travis' abbusive personality, and the romance in it doesn't sound like my cup of tea :P

  37. Thanks for the honest review. It proves me that I made the perfect decision: I'm not going to read this book. The characters really turn me off and the whole unhealthy/dysfunction relationship is also something I don't like.

  38. The reviews I've seen from this are all over the place! From the most gushing adoration, to... well, the very, very, very opposite end of that. It's definitely one of those love/hate books. From everything I've heard and now your review, I'm really not sure it's going to be for me. I'm not a huge fan of drama-filled romances like this - encountering everything under the sun just to test their relationship or pull them apart. It's also disappointing to hear that it doesn't go very deep into Travis' history, considering all I've heard about him, I'd want to understand WHY he's so aggressive.

    Anyway, fantastic review, Sam!

  39. Oh dear...from the reviews I've read so far, this one hasn't been doing well with the bloggers who I find to have tastes similar to mine and share really awesome reviews (that includes you, Sam! <3) It's really too bad that the plot twisted into a sort of a disaster itself, and reaching the "pointless" line really is quite a red light :( Guess this one's just going to depend on you as a reader. Nevertheless, brilliant review as usual, Sam!! I think I'll skip this one.

  41. Travis scared the heck out of me. I think I was traumatized a bit after reading/skimming this. I couldn't fathom Travis's character. And I couldn't understand why Abby didn't dump him. But alas, hormones! I was even more surprised to find that this had a lot of 5-star reviews on Goodreads. I think I was associating this too much on real life, and that's why I couldn't enjoy it.

  42. Great honest review, Sam! I read this one recently and came out feeling a little like you did! The chemistry between the two characters was undeniable but I'm not sure I liked either of them or the countless situations they braved through that provided context for their dramafest.

  43. honestly? I gave up on this book. I got it months ago in a giveaway.
The male lead is just downright scary and the book just didn't know what it wants to be.
    didn't enjoy the plot.
    totally agree with your review

  44. Wow the plot to this does sound really disordered, I think the back and forth between characters and the never ending dramas would probably drive me up the wall, so well done you for sticking it out! The 15,000 5 star ratings does certainly make me curious though! A fab honest review as usual Sam!

  46. I've read a lot of mixed reviews but I'm still so curious about this book. I really shouldn't read this because drama filled plots make me abandon books and the characters sound very frustrating. I can see myself having similar feelings to you but a part of me wants to satisfy my own curiosity. I appreciate the honesty of you review Sam. :)

  47. Love your review, Sam. <3 I am a bit upset though, that I bought the paperback of this book for a lot of money many months ago. Argh. Cause I am pretty sure I will NEVER read it. See, you didn't like it either. And another person I know gave it one star. And she wrote a whole lot of things that happened in the book while she read it, and I'm so sure that I will not like this book at all. Which kind of sucks. But, well, that's how it is :) Kind of glad you didn't like it. Hih. Thank you for writing an honest review :) <3

  48. Awesome review, Sam. I truthfully didn't like it that much when I read it a few weeks ago :/ It was seriously over-dramatic and I guess it's a book people either love or don't.

  49. Lovely and respectful review. I was not quite fully in love with it because of what you mentioned. The repetitive problems and back and forth arguing and breaking up. That got annoying. But I found their dysfunctional disaster of a relationship addictive and a guilty pleasure. I do plan to read Walking Disaster from Travis' POV and get to know him better. This is definitely not something for everyone but I enjoy a good disaster every now and then.
