Review: Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

Title: Alice in Zombieland
Author: Gena Showalter
Publisher: Mira Ink
Released: Oct 05, 2012
Buy: The Book Depository
"The monsters hunger for your flesh, your organs. If they see you, they will chase you. And if they catch you, they will devour you."
The title, Alice in Zombieland (coupled with that mesmerising cover) promises an impressive modern-day retelling of the Lewis Carroll classic. A Wonderland retelling with zombies, of all things. That was enough to capture my attention. This book, in fact, isn’t much of a retelling at all. While a light Alice in Wonderland theme is present throughout the story, it’s not a book that should be taken too seriously. This was a quick and fun zombie-filled tale that anyone looking for a humorous and action-packed ride will enjoy.

Zombies have been growing in popularity in young adult books, and I have to say I personally love reading about them. Gena Showalter puts her own twist on the creatures and delivers something a little different to what most of us have come across before. When Alice Bell, the main character, realises that her father’s frantic whispers of monsters are closer to reality than she first suspected, her new life away from home is focused on remaining one step ahead of the zombies. Enter Cole Holland, a bad-boy character that I’m sure many readers will enjoy. To find out all there is to know about the monsters that lurk in the shadows, Alice has to learn to trust Cole and his rough group of friends. With this, we are handed a plate of romance and butt-kicking, and plenty of entertainment on top.

The fiery relationship between Cole and Alice is one of the highlights of this book. Like everything else, it’s not too serious, but it is very enjoyable to follow. Although a little clichéd here and there, the sexual tension and humorous banter between them is sure to appeal to romance fans. It’s hard not to fall for Cole with his tough-guy attitude and adorable baseball caps. While not the most memorable character ever, Alice is also very likable. Her curiosity is very fitting, and despite the tragedy that she has to deal with, her sense of humour is as strong as Cole’s. The secondary characters, too, are a very entertaining group. I find, most of the time, that the best-friend role is filled with someone a little too typical and loud. Kat pretty much does fit that description, yet I still found her easy to like despite that. Alice’s slang-using grandparents were the characters to steal the show, though. It’s impossible not to love them!

This book gets going with a bit of a rocky start – I didn’t think I would like it all a few pages in! – and while it is not the most skilfully written book, I’m sure many readers will be able to appreciate the entertainment this story provides. There are a few nods to Alice in Wonderland scattered throughout, but nothing too reminiscent of the original story. In the end, it proved to be a fun book that made me smile in between some really not-so-great reads. The sequel, Through the Zombieglass, will definitely have a spot reserved on my bookshelf.

  1. Awesome review, Sam! I've been looking forward to this one for a while now. I'm a bit sad to hear that it isn't really a retelling, but I'm still excited to read about Alice's curious personality and Cole's bad-assery. :) Thanks for your opinion! :)

  2. This sounds like a light and easy read! (Who would have thought, with zombies? ;)) I like that the author has added her own twist and created likeable characters. I have to say, the slang-speaking grandparents sound like characters I just have to meet. Lovely review, Sam! :)

  3. I can't wait to meet the grandparents when I read this book. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!!!!!! Cole sounds great. :) Awesome review Sam! I'm glad this less a retelling, and more its own story.

  4. This one sounds amazing, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't read many re-tellings of classics - as I once read one and it spoiled it completely - but this one looks great! Cole and Alice sounds a fabulous couple. Awesome review, thanks for posting! :)

  5. I am SO excited for this to come out! I might go preorder it now, even though I'm broke. I just can't wait! We'll see if the prototypical relationship between Alice and Cole bothers me or not, but the zombies sound fantastic already.

  6. Amazing review! I've been keeping an eye on this book from the moment I saw the cover and title :D I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, because I heard some negative things already. I really want to get my hands on this one :)

  7. I love the sound of this so much! The title and cover were, as you say, enough to capture my attention, but it's good to know that the book itself wasn't a let down. I'm not a zombie fan, but I've heard good things about a couple of different zombie books, this being one of them... I really need to explore this new trend!

"slang-using grandparents" SERIOUSLY?! I LOVE IT! Haha, and I love the sound of Cal, too.<3 It's a shame you didn't think the writing was the best, but I'm glad you liked this, nonetheless.(:

  8. I thought this would be a more serious book, but still it sounds like something I will like. Especially with the enjoyable romance. A good romance can get me through any book :) I look forward to reading this soon. Lovely review Sam.

  9. You have me so excited to read this one! I love the cover, and rocky start aside, after hearing about the characters and the "slang-using grandparents," this is going on my list of zombie must-reads. Brilliant review, Sam! <3

  10. Aw, I love that this is such a fun book! I wouldn't have really expected that but it does sound super enjoyable overall. The romance sounds really sweet. I'm not a fan of zombie books but maybe I can make an exception for this one. :)

  11. I read an interview and she did mention it was loosely based off Alice in Wonderland so I was expecting too much of a re-telling. I'm glad it is a fun book. Some of those darker zombie books get me down. Very much looking forward to this Cole's tough guy baseball caps. I am always happy when they is a good romance.

  12. I am so glad that you enjoyed this one, Sam! I recently saw a post where the reviewer claimed that this was more of a high school drama than a zombie novel, so I became rather skeptical and afraid to read it, but I think I'll pick it up after all after reading your positive review! :D It seems like such a fun and interesting novel, not to mention one laced with a wonderful romance! Fantastic review, Sam! :)

  17. Sam, I'm not a huge fan of zombie novels but the fact that I loved the cover and synopsis pretty much guaranteed that I would be reading this one. I'm a little surprised to find out that this one isn't really much of a retelling but it still sounds fun (as opposed to gory which is why I avoid zombie novels).

  19. I'm really disappointed that this book isn't what I thought it would be! I was hoping for something dark and twisted and very Alice in Wonderland like. It's kind of surprising to hear that it's so much lighter! However, I still think I'll read it, but I'm definitely not as excited now than I was before. I am glad that you enjoyed it. =) This book definitely seems like fun though!

Fabulous review, Sam! I'll still be picking this book up, but definitely with different expectations.

  20. Great review Sam! Although from the synopsis I was expecting more of a dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland, but this version sounds like a great read too. Thanks for the review ^__^

  22. I still haven't read a book about zombies (and Showalter also), but I have a few on my list that I'm considering to read soon. I've been hearing about this book a lot lately and I'm glad you liked it! I'm adding this to my list now. I can't wait to read more about Cole and Alice. I like it when the couple banters a lot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Sam!

  23. Well I can't say that I'm not a bit surprised with the lighter direction this book takes but I'm not complaining either! Especially now that I know about Splintered... Best of both worlds! :D I love light reads and this one sounds like it will be so entertaining. If the characters are easy to fall for, I'm pretty much sold.

Fantastic review, Sam! :) I can't wait to get to this one!

  26. I am not the biggest fan of Zombies but maybe it is because I still haven't read a book about them? other than This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers. Great review Sam! I love it when there is tension in the romance line and Cole sounds awesome. I love kick-butting in books so this would seem like a great one! especially that it is light

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, Sam! :) xxx

  32. EEEEEEE! Alice in Zombieland! I read it recently and absolutely loved it! I haven't read any books by Gena Showalter since they are also mainly adult books but I heard that she's a fantastic author so I was curious of her works. When I heard that she is writing her first YA series, I was so excited! And the cover, isn't it gorgeous? I'm so glad that I end up loving it and that the book does not disappoint. Gena's take on zombies in this book is unique and Ali is an awesome character. Plus, I really loved the romance between Ali and Cole!

Awesome review, Sam! ♥ So glad you enjoyed it despite the rocky start. Absolutely can't wait for the sequel too ;)

  34. Sam Sam Sam Sam! I LOVE your review! And I'm so happy you enjoyed this. It took me a little whole to warm up to Ali and Cole, but when I did, I was totally hooked on their sexy, bantering relationship. And oh, her grandparents! I ADORE <3 I shamefully have never read nor watched Alice in Wonderland, so I wasn't sure how much of a retelling thos was. Glad you cleared that up for me :D Can't wait to see what Showalter has in store for the coming books!

  37. Yay Sam! So glad you enjoyed this one as well! I had a bit of rocky start with it too, particularly Cole because he seemed very stereotypical and I was getting that bad-boy stalker vibe off him, but then once he and Ali were on the same page with the zombies, things shifted for me and I just fell in love with this whole story. It was so much fun:) Can't wait for the next book!

  41. ERTDRTYRSWESRF Your review has just made me even more desperate for my copy to arrive soon so I can delve into it!!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed this even though it wasn't that skilfully written and the beginning was a bit rocky. And I'm actually glad to hear it's a fun, light read because I'm not really ready for full-on zombie! I'm a little disappointed to hear that it isn't really a re-telling though :(

I can't wait to meet Cole, he sounds like a bad boy I'll warm to!

    Fab review, Sam <3

  43. After reading a few negative points surrounding this book, your review has brought it into a more positive light, Sam. So I think I'll definitely be interested in picking it up now! :)

I like the sound of the humour and the secondary characters are strong, which is something I can always appreciate.

I'll be looking forward to this much more than I was after the review I saw!

  45. Zombie books aren't really my thing. But Alice in Wonderland is. There's something in Wonderland that makes me just sigh with familiarity. Maybe because I am so random =)) Hearing this as a book lightly themed with it is intriguing.

    Great review, Sam :D

  46. I love how the sequel is close to the original title, but..zombie-fied? XD

Awesome review, and will probably consider as light reading material.

  47. I'm actually quite encouraged by your opening paragraph. I'm not a big fan of retellings, so although I love the fact that this book leans lightly on Alice in Wonderland, I'm actually happy it's only loosely connected.
Alice might not be too memorable, but I'm pretty sure Cole will be, as well as their relationship.
Rocky start or not, it makes me feel better knowing that you enjoyed this. I'm all the more excited about my own copy.

  53. Ooh I just got this a few days ago and I can't wait to read it! I do love me some Gena Showalter :)
I've heard that Cole is sort of controlling and mean in the relationship. So I don't know how that'll fare with me, but I'm interested to read it anyway!

  57. So glad you enjoyed this one! Other than the choppy start, I'm pretty sure I'll love ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND (plus, doesn't it have an amazing cover? :D). The romance sounds positively enticing, too!

    Great review, Sam!

  58. AHHHH, that's a little depressing. D: I was SO PUMPED for this to be a Wonderland retelling with zombies included (because that...THAT just sounds really awesome!) but since you say it's pretty good, I think I'll definitely give this one a shot. :D And the fact that the romance is actually enjoyable? YAAAY. Extra incentive for me to read this! I can't wait to dive into the sexual tension ^^

Thanks for your lovely review, hun! :)
